Off to Mackinac Island

Hi F and F,
Got up early around 7 am as we had a longer run today.
Mellissa came over for our blueberry pancake ( remember she supplied the fish wild blueberries and Canadian bacon breakfast. Delicious!
We had a lovely time chatting and found out Melissa actually lives n CC East our neighborhood!
She moved there in 2012 ! At the riding school it's all business , so don't get to find out where the volunteers live!
Set off at 8.45 am and 2 hours later we entered the False Detour Passage.
This is where Drummond Island on our right belongs to USA and Cockburn Island on our left belongs to Canada. A dotted line in the middle of the channel separates them both.
Detour was the main route fur traders used by those who wanted to get to Mackinac Is where many of the fur trading business transactions occurred.
By way Mackinac is pronounced Mack- I naw.All very confusing as there is a Mackinaw City just across the water.
We entered into Lake Huron and the wind was slightly stronger with  seas of 2 ft and some rocking and rolling.
Quite exposed here until we got to closer to Bois Blanc Island which sheltered us as we headed the last part to the Mac Island as the locals call it here.
We were given an inside slip just as well because the ferry boat action and the  winds made for a rocking affair in the slip.Had to put out more fenders and lines and get used to the old style posts to tie up . No floating docks here!
Almost like our experience we had in Manhattan at Chelsea Piers a few years ago.
Lots of people biking , horse carriages everywhere.and the Mackinac Fort standing high on the hill dominating the  place. We checked in and asked our lovely Marina lady about eating places and things to do. .She was most helpful. We always find you learn more from the locals and have the info immediately rather thanusing time to gather it yourself.
We then walked through the town which was heaving with tourists and stores particularly fudge shops The specialty here.Graeme's turn to do some retail therapy and he found some smart shorts and matching shirts, Jack the owner even booked us our dinner reservations at his favorite restaurant and his table  for tomorrow night We bought tickets for the Fort for tomorrow and found out if you buy them after 3 pm on one day , they are valid all the next day and you don't have to queue up in the morning when all the tourists arrive!
We walked up to the Fort and watched a rifle and cannon  firing display. The officers all dressed in period uniforms. Also watched a short movie there before heading back down the hill .Got changed and headed out again to find a horse taxi to take us up to the Grand Hotel. Only $5 per person.
The hotel is indeed Grand , a must see f you come visit here.
We took  the evevator to the sixth floor to the Cupola Bar which has a magnificent view of the town and water.
We saw sailing boats go by ,the ferries still buzzing back and forth to Mac City and also some very  large container ships.
Had a nice supper and cocktails there. That would do for our dinner!
A pianist started about 8.30 pm to add to the ambience of this lovely  spot.
Headed back into town and the Marina An easy walk back.
Back at the boat we heard the last bugler play the closing call. Very nice touch!
Over and out ,
E and G
