We left early about 7.30 am with our little flotilla of five boats .Capt Mel in the front.
His wonderful Alabama accent works well with the tow barge operators !
There was a lot of barge activity on the river which required careful manuvering around the many bends
The weir dams caused reasonable amount of turbulence also.
Weir Dams are rock sills in the channel of a bend usually angles at 20 or 30 degrees into the flow of the River. They are spaced 400 to 1,400 ft part and can be up to 1,600 ft in length their purpose is to control the flow of water through the bend..
As we rounded one end at mile marker 83 the water depth measured 100 feet. We kept alert to red buoy markers that had shifted to the wrong side of the river anb Mel kept us on the right path.
We got into Little Diversion Channel mid afternoon. Just off the Miss river and it was peaceful and quiet.Reminded us of some of the anchor spots on the Cheasapeake Bay .
A few hours later , five more boats joined us at the anchor spot.
We invited Ann and Mel to have an anniversary dinner on board Lady Erica, as they hadn't had one the night of their anniversary.Too difficult at Kaskaskia lock.
We had picked up a pack for Nasi Goreing mix in Holland , Michigan and made it up with meat and veg , plus we had the famous high domed apple pie for dessert.
We had a wonderful evening together and then all retired for the night.
Going to be a long day tomorrow.
Over and Out,
E and G.
