Day 17

Hi F&F ,
This is the end of  our first stage south!
Woke up to the unpleasant perfume of the nearby paper mill! Obviously the wind direction had changed! We decided to forgo the wonderful 3 egg fluffy omelettes at the Good Break Cafe  in Georgetown this morning and headed off around 9 am.
I forgot to mention yesterday a funny situation.Just after we got on the ICW from Grande Dunes Marina I suddenly spied on the edge of the bank a small low lying boat completely camouflaged in green and brown colors.Around it were several floating plastic ducks! We were going about 12 knots so I called  to Graeme to slow down! I am known as the anti wake police on our boat! There was a guy inside the boat also in his camouflaged gear! Well he got quite a rock and roll from our wake ,but all was ok. We truly did not see him til the last moment! No doubt he is hoping the live ducks will not either!
Back to today,We had a great run to Charleston. The canal was straight for the most part, wide and smooth and the vistas wonderful. Lots of low lying marshes, birds everywhere and dolphins accompanying us every now and again. We passed Slow Dancing a boat from Mobile Alabama once again and also Rosie a sailboat from Philadelphia .Its funny how you see the same boats over and over again on a journey like this. We passed the Charleston City Marina full of boats or should I say in some cases ,ships. Saw some beautiful big sailboats parked on the outside docks. Had another 15 ft bridge to negotiate once again just before our Marina  , but fortunately the tides are bigger the further south you go ,so we were able to get under with a good foot or so to spare.
We will keep our boat here for the next 2weeks as we will drive north to join family and friends for Christmas.
I will resume the blog after the 1st January 2013.
I will leave you with this saying on a small plaque which sits on the boat.
" Every day is a gift, that's why they call it the present!" We hope you to can value each day and we wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Over and Out,
Erica and Graeme.

Day 16 off to Georgetown

Hi there F&F
Got up to a misty day and decided to wait a half hour for it to clear. Left about 8.30am and started off back down the ICW.Two other boats were chugging along ahead of us.First time we have really ha dcompany. There was a lovely stretch of canal not unlike the Dismal Swamp for most of the way .all Cypress trees lined the way and the water was very still. We had to avoid quite a lot of water lilies growing in the canal and also several floating logs, some were quite large. So its important to keep alert , you don't want damage done to those expensive propellers! We had a swing bridge of 11 ft to wait briefly for an opening, but no dramas this time. I was able to download on the I Pad and listen to a sermon from my church Cornerstone in Leesburg Virginia along the way. Then  I prepared lunch on board ( one of the benefits of traveling by boat ) something you can't really do so easily traveling by car or RV ( Campervan). We arrived at 1 pm and then after tying up went for a walk through the town.We were here for Graeme' s birthday just over a year ago.The town is doing ok ,barely.Several restaurants still open ,but unfortunately our favorite The Rice Paddy was closed Sunday. We had heard the Krazy Fish Restaurant / Bar had great food so decided to wander back in the evening and try it out.As we entered there was a cockatoo bird sitting on top of his cage saying" Hello."This bird belongs to the owner of the restaurant and the husband walked around with it on his arm .Quite a talkative bird it was too and most entertaining. They think its about 25 yrs old. Also there was an Italian Mastiff dog wandering about belonged to one of the staff. It looked a bit like a Sharpei without all the wrinkles and was a very calm and quiet dog fortunately. Well, the food was good , but the biggest surprise came when we received the bill!I kid you not, there was no mention of food.
Laptop bag $ 9.95 was Graeme's entree
Laptop bag $8.95 was my entree
Laptop bag $ 3.50 was the soup
Wallets     $ 2.50 was my beer
Tote bag $5.50 was Graeme's glass of wine
Tote bag $5.50 was Graeme's 2nd glass of wine.
Were they posing as a Bag shop perhaps?
Oh well, I guess crazy can be spelt many ways!

Another Day in Myrtle Beach Day 15

Hi F&F ,
We had a nice leisurely day in our Grande Dunes Resort. Started off with a cooked breakfast at Waterside the resort restaurant, then it was off to the supermarket for provisions and later we were taken over by the resort staff to the Grande Dunes golf course once the weather warmed up. Played a good nine holes, course was nice and easy ( if there is such a thing !) in perfect weather not too hot or too cold. Later at the cocktail hour we walked all of about 20 steps off the boat to Ruth Chris restaurant  where  they had a lovely bar area and tried out their Christmas cocktails .Wandered back afterwards for a vegetable chili on board the boat . We would come back here again It is very convenient on the ICW , good amenities and the staff  friendly and helpful.

Day 14 Off to Myrtle Beach

Hi again F&F ,
We had quite a long journey today at least 73 miles. It doesn't sound much by car but believe me it takes a while by water! We started off back down the Cape Fear River and to the open sea. The sea was very mild about 1 ft seas and a following  slight wind .A beautiful sunny day to top it off. We travelled down to the Little River Inlet and entered in at Little River SC.On the way in we saw the two casino cruise ships near the entrance. These boats go out several times a day. As we entered in to join the ICW , we also crossed the line between North and South Carolina. Now we crawled along as it was in a fairly built up area and we are mindful of the wake our boat leaves that can affect the shoreline .All the bridges we passed were easy to clear until we came to a low swing bridge.Had forgotten that to hail this bridge on the VHF radio  now we had crossed into South Carolina we had to change channels from 13 to 9. Couldn't at first work out why the bridge attendant was not responding. We caught on after a few minutes and carried on. The marina we are staying in for the next two nights is called Grande Dunes and has most pleasant staff. At check in , we received  a nice bottle of wine  and a promise to drive us to supermarket tomorrow and also book a tee time and drive us to the golf course in the morning .It is fairly quiet here at present although there are surrounding high rise condos and 3 restaurants on site.
Chose to eat on board with a nice glass of wine and tried out our electric George Foreman grill. It was highly successful. Lovely sunset and a crescent moon completed the evening.

A surprise dinner at Wilmington

Hi there F&F ,
Day 13.
Today you get two days as Wifi not so good where we were docked in Wilmington. We are so glad we made this diversion.Maybe wouldn't return except for the restaurant but more later on that one! We woke up to a cold , windy and cloudy day. Would have been easy just to stay curled up with a book for the day in the cosy boat ,but we need the exercise ( one downside of cruising is lack of  opportunity to exercise) And as for trying Pilates on the boat, forget it!We set off to explore the town and find the trolley tour of the historic area and check out the restaurants for our evening meal tonight. Turns out the trolley tours are not operating  in December expect for Saturdays, so armed with a map we did our own. This town is full of lovely old homes one after another. Each with a plaque giving the history of the house. We also made a lovely River Walk along the Cape Fear river where there are lots of shops and restaurants all with a view of the river. We picked out a nice looking restaurant called Pilot House on the waterfront ( a favorite with the locals )  and returned  there after a leisurely afternoon. The waitress suggested where we should sit even though it was free sitting.Turns out we were put next to a group of 6 business people  who were fairly noisy , but in a happy kind of way. But so what, the meal was fabulous ? I had salmon en papilotte which I would go back for any day! When Graeme asked for the check, the waitress said the table next to us was paying our check! Turns out another couple had sat at our table and then asked to move because of the noise . So,we walked out having had a free meal.Extraordinary! We walked back along the waterfront.Apparently there were meteor showers in the sky thought we didn't see any. There is quite a current running in the river so we heard a fair amount of slapping on the hull when the tides changed. But ear plugs really help so we were not too bothered.

Day 12 To Wilmington

Hi F&F ,
Well this morning we planned a really early start 7am! But it was such a grey day and visibility not so great so ended up leaving nearer 8 am.Today we needed some strategy to get through two low bridges , so we worked out the distance and speed and were able to successful go under them with  a few minutes wait. Along the way we fueled up at a really cheap fuel dock in Swan River ($3.39 per gallon). This makes sense when you are putting in up to 200 gallons at a time at around $4 a gallon for diesel . With speeds  of 23 mph , we average around 30 gallons per hour. Graeme has a special app on his I Pad which lists all the docks  and fuel prices. Of course in the ICW we are going anywhere between 6 and 12 mph.
This stretch of the ICW had lots of fishing activity mainly clam harvesting. The boats had lots of  hungry pelicans surrounding them. They were looking for a good  feed. occasionally the fishermen would throw out some tidbits. At one point we saw a boat with the name Heather R.A.E on the transom and thought of our good friend Heather Rae! Sadly Heather I didn't get my camera ready in time ,but it really did say that! We had a couple of scary points along the way where temporary buoys had been place because of shoaling .One of them had been marked incorrectly and we felt the dreaded shuddering and the boat stopped.By putting the boat into neutral Graeme was able to nudge his way forward into deeper water. It was cloudy most of the way but no rain.Once we entered the Cape Fear River we were in deep water and no speed restrictions , so had a lovely run up to Wilmington. This place has a big port and lots of Coast Guard activity. We tied up just outside the Hilton Hotel along the River Walk in front of the big Coast Guard Ship called Diligence. Lots of young guys and gals are living on board and training up and down the river Also opposite us ,is the famous battleship North Carolina.Saved from demolition , it has its resting place here and is a great tourist attraction. This battleship had over 50 battle engagements, mainly in the Pacific arena during WW2.
The rain started to come down so we holed up inside  and had dinner on board. Will explore the town tomorrow.

Day 11 Try to go outside into the Atlantic

Hi F&F
We had an early start ( well for me that is!) around 8 am this suspect first bridge was even better today as we were at low tide and easily went underneath with good clearance. The Neuse river was calm , lots of pelicans flying about especially near the entrance. We had a good trip back down to join up the ICW near Oriental where we had spent a night recently. We made a decision to go for Beaufort ( remember its pronounced like Bowfort in NC but Bufort in SC even thought both have the same spelling) At Beaufort we stopped , tied up with free dockage just for lunch.Enjoyed a nice lunch at Queen Anne's Revenge ( named after Black Beard's flagship which was found somewhere in NC waters) bug surprise , we met up again with our lady friends on Raising the Bar cruiser .Turned out they are a mother daughter team named Hope and Faith! Wonder if there is a sister called Charity or Love in the family! They were  the ones delivering a boat to Florida and were about to head out into the ocean so we suggested we give them a call and if things looked good we would  join them ..However it was awful, 6 ft seas so we decided to scrape that idea and head down the ICW the much slower course.I think in future it is best to go outside weather permitting and come in at Wrightsville Beach .Both inlets are very good and not bad for shoaling .Many of the inlets are not recommended unless you have local knowledge  in this area.
We arrived at Casper's Marina  where we had stayed in March and finally got to try the IceHouse Waterfront Restaurant.Well worth the visit.Watched a DVD then off to bed.Over and out. Erica

Now to New Bern for two nights Day 9 & 10

Hi there F&F,
Day 9:
We woke up to the most glorious day Still glassy water and a shining sun. As we pulled away from the dock we saw sail boats gently moving and our first sight of a pod of dolphins .We drove up the Neuse River to New Bern and due to the low tide were able to squeeze  under the bridge just before the Grand New Bern  Marina. Normally 15 ft clearance it was more like 16 ft  so no problems. The beauty of having a boat without a Fly Bridge or Mast. This Marina is run by the Hilton Hotel group so we get all the privileges we would if staying in the hotel.Free newspapers and coffee every morning . Many boaters use this Marina as a permanent place to live.Several have sold up their house and possesions and live very simply. We took this deviation so we could visit our friends Carolyn and Bill Carlton who we know from CYC ( Chesapeake Yacht Club where we keep our boat) Had drinks on board Lady Erica and Bill promised to bring the best fried oysters as he had done back in April when we visited them also by boat. Went back to their house for a lovely dinner then back to our home away from home for the night.

Day 10 :
Woke up to wet conditions which soon cleared  and we ended up with another sunny day 73 degrees.
Walked into town just a block away and made for the Tryon Palace built in 1770.  In 1798 it was destroyed by fire but has been lovingly restored using original plans and is beautifully kept. This was designed by a British architect and was out to impress the locals as a show of Britsh might and regal status. The tour lasts 45 mins and the guide is dressed in 17 th century clothing. Our lady was most informative.Well worth a visit. We also got to see inside two other homes nearby as part of the ticket price. Then we were in for a treat ! We went to MJ's restaurant to meet Bill Carlton's 100 yr old Dad and have lunch with him ,Bill and Carolyn .He insisted on sitting between us so we could  talk. Just an amasing man!Apart from some hearing loss ,he was as sharp as a tack! He talked of his doctor 's surgery practice back in 1923 when there were no cures for anything! He has seen great strides in the
medical field  since then. He insisted he wanted to see our boat , so Graeme and Bill took him on board.Just loved it had to see everything.Shades of my Dad. Had a leisurely afternoon reading then dinner on board. We will be leaving around 8.30 am tomorrow as we have a longer journey again .

On to Oriental

Hi there F&F,
Today we had a longer journey ahead of us so we left promptly at 8 am. We headed back south down the Albemarle Sound towards the coast  .Instead of joining the ICW we decided to take the wider and no bridge option of Pamlico Sound..fortunately it was calm but we did strike fog on occasions sometimes quite thick.Probably because of the fluctuating temps we have been having. This sound runs parallel to the ICW route of Alligator River.Very few boats around although we did have a large 50 ft boat pass us going at a rapid speed early on .Then the NC coast guard came on the radio asking the boat questions such as where are you heading , have you been boarded recently by the Coast Guard.Turns out they were delivering a boat for someone , hence the speed I guess. So then they turned to us and we were asked the same questions but they decided to come on board and check us out. They came along side boarded and checked our paperwork declared we were Ok and let us carry on.Last December we were boarded down inFlorida. I guess they are looking for drug runners or just liked the look of our boat. Six and half hours later we arrived at Oriental Marina.Country music was playing  here and lots of festive spirit.Cookies and drinks for the guests and encouragement to come watch the street parade at 4 pm.After docking we did go down to watch the parade .A collection of cars some very old like model T Ford, other vehicles such as fire trucks, bands church groups ,dogs kids groups. The streets were lined with bags with real candles inside.Once it was dark they were lit and it made for a pretty sight down the Main Street. They stretched at least a mile or so. Later we had dinner on board and had a relaxing evening. Over and Out Erica.

Catch time time again Day 7

Hi F &F,
As you know we decided to have an extra day in Edenton. My favorite small town so far along the East Coast and I think others have found it so as there are many who moved to live here permanently from  other parts of USA. They are celebrating 300 years 1712 to 2012.
Graeme took himself off on a mission in the morning to check out a small oil painting he had seen in an art gallery .Came back smiling with a parcel under his arm! We found a perfect spot to hang it but minus the large gold frame it came with.Called Together Forever ,it is a water scene with two boats and seemed the perfect choice for an early Wedding Anniversary gift .It will be 37 years
next January10th !
We bought tickets for the annual Christmas in Edenton.Started off with a trolley tour of the many beautiful homes then visited two of the  homes Iredell house and Barker house. Treats  inside the homes included their famous eggnog A cholesterol delight! Wassail, a wine based punch and lots of home baked cookies. Also music been played by local residents made for an authentic tour.
Myra and Noel joined us at 3.30 pm and we visited the Cupola house , there we were welcomed with men and women in traditional costumes of the period A lot like Williamsburg in Virginia.
At 4 pm the house Candlelight tours stared and we started with the Hayward Plantation first.A most beautiful home and sitting right near the Edenton Bay. After that we visited about  6 homes again well decorated for the Christmas season and we finished off with a visit to the Old Edenton Courthouse  1767 for Christmas Carols. They have a all men choir , they all sang archipelago then we join in later on.Finished up with dinner at the 309 Bistro .I had the most delicious pork Osso Bucco.
Great day.

Day 6 In Edenton

Hi there F &F ( Family and Friends)
We are enjoying our stay here in Edenton ! It is another beautiful day although a bit cooler ,ie down to 50 degrees. Our slip is wonderful with  full views of the Edenton Bay. I could stay here for at least a couple of weeks!  Armed with our maps and info we walked up one side of the Main Street and down the other.Stopped to look at St Paul's Episcopal Church ( the oldest in NC) also checked in at the visitors center and bought some blistered peanuts .So called , because of the process to prepare the peanuts which are boiled first in water  then cooked in canola oil which blisters the skin .Supposed to be less oily. Stopped for lunch at the bistro 309 Had a delicious Cuban Reuben sandwich with salad and homemade honey Dijon mustard dressing.Hoping  to go back tomorrow night for dinner there! That leads me onto the next thing ,we have decided to stay an extra night so we can go on the Christmas candlelight tour of 15 of the historic houses .Apparently it is a must do and there will be egg nog served and desserts along the way.We called Myra and Noel  and they will join us around 4 pm.
Decided we would go on a long walk to get some exercise and walk off our big lunch, so set off to a  nearby Plantation . The air was crisp and clear, the water was sparkling, the sun sunning brightly, it can't get much better!  Got back around 3 pm and then borrowed Bob's courtesy car get get our provisions from the local Food Lion supermarket. Graeme is on duty to cook up the Lets Dish Moroccan Chicken while I do this blog.A little history to finish about Edenton.
It was established  in 1712 and served as the first Colonial Capital until 1743.In the days before the Revolution it was a small but highly prosperous seaport .With the building of the Dismal Swamp , Edenton no longer held its importance as a port and put an end to its boom in 1830's.

Day Five Off to Edenton

Hi Family and Friends,
Today we decided to leave mid day as we wanted to see the Albemarle Museum which had rave views in the area .It indeed lived up to its name a well put together museum with lots of exhibits starting from the beginning settlers ,Native Indian and European then going on to the  Civil War , WW2 and the modern day. Its a short run in the Albemarle Sound up north to Edenton. This part of the trip  is a deviation for us ,as we want to catch up with some old friends Myra and Noel McKechie .Noel used to work for Mobil Oil and retired in this area some years ago..Also we were intrigued to see the town and on top of that the dockage was free! The journey took 2 1/2 hours and easy running at about 20 knots. We had to avoid quite a few crab pots and pass an area off limits (sounds like navy  military may do some training in the area!) Arrived at Edenton harbor and we were greeted  by Bob the friendly dock master. He helped us tie up , gave us a welcome packet with maps, a bag of peanuts in the shell (popular down here) and  bottled water and said he had a courteously car we could use if we wanted to do any shopping. This is service and all for free! We were the only visiting boat ( the advantage of traveling south so late) Just us , 3 small resident boats and the seagulls.
At 5 pm Myra and Noel arrived for drinks and snacks on board. We had fun catching up then walked together the one block to the Waterman's Grille for dinner. We found the town friendly and certainly stronger economically than Elizabeth City. Beautifully restored old homes line the waterfront. it turns out that this area did not receive much damage during the Civil War. we feel we are really getting  into the south now!

Behind already! Day 4

Hi there Friends and Family,
Another beautiful sunny day and warm 72 degrees on the Dismal Swamp Canal. We left mid morning , the sailors (our neighbors for the night ) had got up early to make the 8.30 am lock opening. We decided the 11 am opening suited us fine.In fact we never saw any other boats on today's trip  apart from the odd small fishing boat .One guy offered us a specked trout he had caught. We politely declined.Filleting fish is not one of our skills yet! The South Mills lock had the same arrangement as the other one. This time in reverse. The bridge opened first then the lock keeper raced off  in his car to organize the lock opening. This time we went down 8 ft.This guy was not as friendly as our other lock keeper. No tips or advice or history lesson. The rest of the Canal was idyllic .Graeme had music playing on his I Pod Diana Krall soothed us all the way ! We rounded the last bend and there was Elizabeth City. The dock was right on the edge of town. Elizabeth City became popular after the  completion of the Dismal Swamp was completed in 1805. It's named after a resident innkeeper called Elizabeth Tooley.  After settling in , we made a walk into the town carrying our very dirty fender covers ( caused by the locks)  to find a laundry place. While walking along a lady informed us we were entering a bad part of town and mentioned there had been a drug bust just last night near where we were walking! Great! Well, we were fine .Found a great little coffee house called Muddy Waters .Had the  best cup of coffee , sure beats Starbucks! Lovely old homes here but the area not so thriving  and definitely several places were run down. We decided to eat out and there has a handy place called Groupers right next to our dock. Naturally we ordered fish and seafood! Early to bed again.

Day 3 on the Dismal Swamp

Hi Family and Friends,
Woke up to a beautiful sunny day and decided to leave at 8.30am in plenty of time to catch the 15ft Gilmerton bridge which first opened at 9.30am.Would you believe it ,the previous rail bridge usually open decided to close to let on a 49 carriage train! So we waited a good half hour there and missed our opening. However we called up the bridge keeper who informed us it was a 15ft 1/2inch clearance so we just got under ( we have a 15 ft clearance on the boat)and headed off for the Dismal Swamp. So named because the diggers of the canal( all employed ruffians back in 1787 ) declared it a dark and dismal area.It is the oldest operating artificial waterway in the USA. Our first stop was at the Deep Creek Lock where again we had to wait for an opening of about 45 mins. Not the kind of journey if you are in a hurry!
The Lock Master organized us and the sailboat behind us then proceeded to open the gates and the water flowed in to a height of 8 ft. Once completed, the Lock Master decided to give us an informative lecture  about the canal . The area surrounding the Canal has Jupiter and Cypress trees in abundance .They leach tannins into the waterway and the fresh water becomes very acidic. So much so ,no bacteria can survive in it. The water is the color of dark tea. George Washington owned the whole area of the dismal swamp. He was a man of many talents and means. He harvested the trees for lumber  , and another fact little known fact, he was also the largest rum producer in USA ! The Lock Keeper had double duty and once we were underway,he drove off down the road to open a bridge we then went through. The  journey to our destination the Dismal Swamp Welcome center took about 5 hours going through the lovely serene vistas at about 6 miles speed and using 1.7 gallons per hour.
( normally we would be using around 30 gallons per hour)The sailors would be proud of us ,we were enjoying the journey not aiming to get there as fast as possible! We tied up and two sailboats joined us for the night. We went for a nice long walk through the nature reserve then cooked dinner on boat thanks to Lets Dish. I was in bed by 9.30pm!

On the water again heading South Dec 2012

Hi there Family and Friends!
Well this year we left it a little late to travel south but so far it worked out on the trip down the Chesapeake Bay to Norfolk , the start of the ICW.
Day 1:
Saturday 1st Dec we left our boating home and headed for Reedville a quaint little Virginia town at about the half way point to Norfolk. We had following seas which made for a pleasant ride, only problem was there was fog sometimes quite thick with visibility less than a mile most of the way. Fortunately as we're headed into the marina  at Cockrell Creek the weather cleared and the sun was shining .After a 4 hour journey we were able to tie up at the small Reedville Marina and Crazy Crab Restaurant at the fuel dock. . After settling in ,we took a walk through the town and visited the little Fishermens Museum ,the Model Train Museum and a tour of one of the old houses  owned by the Taylor family. All for the price of $3 each! After a cocktail onward the boat we walked all of about 12 steps to the Crazy Crab Restaurant where we dined with the locals. The place was full by 6.30pm and people waiting to be seated. The steamed shrimp were one of the best meals we have had recently, and the fresh flounder and rockfish were pretty good also. A successful  first day cruising!

Day 2:
Had a leisurely morning and left about 11am , the water was less calm initially but at least no fog! A we approached the York River area , amazingly the water calmed down and took on a smooth glassy appearance .We also saw our first brown pelicans , three of them in a line skimming the surface .They usually only come up the Chesapeake Bay about half way .As we entered into Hampton area we slowed down and made the last part of the journey passing by all the Navy vessels, mainly aircraft carriers  Norfolk is famous for. Reminded me of when my Dad came  over  from NZ and we were invited to go on board the brand new John C.Stennis aircraft carrier. he was like and excited school boy! We decided to try Portsmouth as we had stayed in Norfolf previously. Docked at the Tidewater Marina with its nice floating docks and then took a short walk into the town. Started out with a beer at a huge sports bar with about 14 TV's playing various American Football games simultaneously . Two exciting games were just finishing and the crowd were really getting excited.Afterwards we took a stroll through a lovely old historic housing area and then went to eat at the genuine German Bier Garden! Graeme had schnitzel and I the pork loin complete with red cabbage, sauerkraut and German potato salad and mustard .
Back to the boat for an early night.

Last Day

Hi faithful Bloggers,
Well this is the last day of our 5 month journey. We decided due to yesterday's experience that we would get up very early and head off.We didn't fancy a repeat performance of the wind and water conditions We got up and left at 6.45am. It was relatively calm and we watched a lovely sunrise as we left the dock.Fortunately the waves were about 1 to 2 feet and we had an easy trip to the West River. We docked into our slip at CYC around mid day.It was good to be back and catch up with our CYC buddies.Had a nice meal at the club that evening, farewelling a lovely couple who are moving to Wisconsin shortly. The club even gave our table a bottle of champagne so we could toast the happy couple off on their new adventure.
On reflection , we decided we really like this boating life style and could quite happily do this regularly. At least while money and health permits.
Thank you for sharing in our journey, we hope you have had fun doing it .We certainly did, and we felt very blessed!

6th April last stop before CYC

Hi Everyone,
Well this is our final marina before getting back to home base Shadyside ,West River. We decided to have one more round of 9 hole golf before leaving. The winds were up but we were hoping once underway they wouldn't be too strong.Well, we were wrong. This stretch to Solomon's Island took four hours of hard slog with waves around three feet or more especially where the Potomac Ricer joins The Chesapeake Bay.Lots of swell and chop and then a series of high waves where the boat would just slam down hard. Our coffee pot shattered and most of the items in the cupboards were rearranged. But we held on ,the boat plowed through it all steadily and we got into the Zahnisers Yacht Center Marina in Solmon's Island around 4 pm. We were rewarded with a lovely meal at the Dry Dock restaurant which is attached to the marina. We slept well after a difficult journey.

Tides Inn 4 th &5 th April

Hi Everyone,
Well, before heading to Tides Inn , we decided to spend the morning exploring Norfolk and found it to be a lovely town with lots of interesting restaurants. .We headed back to the boat for lunch on board then departed at just after noon. The Chesapeake Bay waters were smooth and we had a good run up to Tides Inn in Irvington VA.On arrival we were thrilled to see new piers and floating docks.A real treat.Tides Inn marina is part of the the resort so you pay a daily fee here ontop of dock fees. For that you get use of kayaks and canoes, bicycles , free golf plus use of clubs on a fun little 9 hole course on the premises , free use of laundry facilities, a newspaper delivered to your boat each morning and of course there are two lovely restaurants and a lawn area which overlooks the river where you can have drinks and watch the sun set.
On arrival we also couldn't help but notice the large Westport ship docked here called Boardwalk. it has been the talk of the town as a local guy is the captain of this 165' vessel. We got to park right next to it. Lots of crew on board who spend hours cleaning the ship.Got to talk to a nice young South African girl who was enjoying the new cruising lifestyle on Boardwalk.
We ate in the restaurant in the evening and enjoyed some delicious local fried oysters.Yummy!
Next day we decided to try out the golf course practicing our new swing we were taught in Hilton Head. must say I am happy to have my old swing style back and Graeme looks so much more fluid when he swings .So here's hoping we can get back to golf together again!
In the afternoon we rode the bicycles down to the little town of Irvington. Two lovely boutique shops there ! One for ladies The Dandelion and one for men Jimmy Sook ( the names of crabs Jimmy male and Sook female) Came back , and I tried out the kayak. We then turned on the Masters golf and watched TV til 6pm. Had dinner on board and a nice relaxing evening.

April 3 rd Early Start

Hi All,
Well today is our big journey as we needed to get to Norfolk this evening so Jean and Gene could get back to their home .A total of 135 miles on the ICW our longest yet in one day!
We did depart at 6.45 am.The sun had just come up and it was a glorious morning.Water was calm and still and a gentle mist was rising on the surface of the water. A fishing boat which had been docked in front of us at the Bellhaven marina had left just 10 mins earlier than us also bound for Norfolk. so we followed them all the way including a stop for fuel at Coinjock in NC .Coinjock had been our original stop had we not got stuck in Bellhaven the second night. It sits right on the ICW a long face ( side dock)and is purely a place to park for the night, fuel up and eat at its little restaurant. We saw lots of Osprey nesting on the way usually at the bouy markers. They mate for life so presumably come back to the same nesting spot. They fly up from their winter spots in South America around mid march .We crossed through into Virginia territory and approached Great Bridge area with its one lock and the crazy bridge openings which open on this hour or half hour.I.E this meant we traveled very slowly in between each bridge ( not so bad if you are a sailboat going 6 Kts ) but three bridges were only 3 miles apart and you have 1 hour to travel that distance! The last bridge we had been told was 11" height , but then the lock master told us it was 17" After some research we found the bridge height was infact 15 " .If we didn't go under this one , we would be caught waiting for 2 and 1/2 hours! So we calculated we had about 6 " to spare if we did not count the antenna, and decided to risk it. Made for a scary moment but we made it allowing the whippy anntenna to bend just under the bridge. The other boat we had been following and another boat that had joined us on the way ,did not have the same luxury and had to wait it out. We arrived into Waterside marina in Norfolk at 5pm. Jean and Gene headed north in a rental car and we spent the night having dinner on board after a drink in the cockpit watching the sun set . Relaxing evening with some TV watching and then bed.Along day but very pleasant. It was such fun having our friends on board for this journey and confirmed to us why we did such a crazy thing and bought this new Sabre 48
so soon after our new Sabre 40.The 48 is so much more suitable for two couples.

April 2 nd Still in Belhaven

H Bloggers
Well after checking the weather forecast and seeing the large American flag outside our boat window flapping strongly in the breeze, we realized we would not be going today .The conformation was a call to the Alligator bridge we had to go under was closed. This is the only bridge to my knowledge on the ICW that does not open for traffic when the winds reach a certain speed.Ironically there was another marina near this bridge ( about 21/2 hours drive away for us)but it was just north of the bridge and we were south of it . So we were stuck here for another day but it didn't really bother us too much. Jean and Gene did a "recky " ( check out) of the town to see if perhaps we could get dinner out as it was Monday .Well that wasn't good .However we did end up going for lunch at the local cafe. Meat and two veg cooked by 3 ladies out the back in the kitchen. In fact it was quite good. Jean and I checked out the Pharmacy and bought some items including our dessert called Mud pies wrapped up in cellophane.Kind of marshmallow sandwich covered in chocolate. Graeme was already thinking about dinner so Brenda took the guys to the supermarket 2 and 1/2 miles away and guess what we were in for ,more salad and spaghetti sauce! Jean and I relaxed reading and then later the guys did the whole meal and served it. The ladies did the dishes. The sunset was spectacular this evening .Such a treat to see it from the boat.
We had an early night as we were going to be leaving really early in the morning Before 7 am!

First of April: April Fools Day

Hi Everyone,
Well you had probably thought I had given up on blogging! No April Fool on board except Graeme. He got an email from a couple at CYC who were changing slips today They said a new member was in their new slip Graeme had just assigned them.Poor Graeme was fooled into believing the note and was busy scrambling in his mind who was this new member and how he was going to solved this issue. Anyway they fessed up so all was well!Hope you all fared Ok with this day and with no surprises!
Anyway back to the journey North.
We departed New Bern at around 11 am as we were able to go to a Palm Sunday service at an Episcopal church in town. Jean and Gene enjoyed it and found the liturgy very similar to their Catholic service. Stopped on the way back to the boat at the locals bakery and coffee shop with wonderful homemade cinnamon buns.Bad but delicious!
We had a good trip on the ICW and arrived at the Belhaven Marina around 3 pm.Time wise that is a very comfortable journey for us.The marina is small and run very efficiently by a married couple. They live on the premises in a big RV (caravan) which sits on a manicured lawn and has a lovely garden and gazebo.Brenda has an artistic flair which was evident when we went to the bathrooms . The ladies room was decorated in a sea and fishes theme in fact you felt like you were under the water ,so many fish adorned the walls. The men's room was full of 2 nd World War posters and letters. It was all tastefully done and a real surprise. We wandered into the town of Belhaven .Not much going on.I fact we were told the restaurants close on a Sunday at 2 pm after church! We did find ask Ace hardware store with all sorts of interesting things to buy Graeme even found a bottle of North Carolina wine for sale which he bought to try.Fortunately I had bought some backup meals on board and we had a wonderful salad followed by a great spaghetti and meat sauce done Italian style. We sat eating dinner watching the sun set and couldn't have been happier!

Last Day of March

Hi Y'all,
We departed 10am heading for New Bern, NC.We have friends Bill and Caroline who live there but still keep their boat on West dock at CYC.We last saw them at CYC in November and hatched the plan to met up in North Carolina. After passing Morehead City on the ICW we turned inland and up into the Neuse river ,reputed to be the widest river in USA at its mouth. We made the 1.30 hours off the ICW up to New Bern.We docked at the New Bern Grand Marina. After docking we had a call from Bill who picked us up for a tour of the town then Jean and I went out to see their lovely home with a dock in a community with a water area called a hurricane hole.Supposted to be very sheltered. Later in the early evening Caroline and Bill came n board for drinks bring with them freshly fried oysters .They were delicious ! We went out for dinner at Persimmons a local restaurant which served great fresh fish and even NZ lamb! These southerners like NZ food it seems! It was a lovely time catching up with friends and well worth the deviation!

March 30th onwards north

Hi everybody,
Initially Seas and wind direction looked good with predicted following winds, but on heading out into the ocean it was the dreaded NE wind and they were stronger than expected. So once agin we decided that 4 hours of bumping along was not a great idea and we headed back inland to the ICW. Easy trip up but as as we were going slower ,we decided to dock at Swansboro instead of Beaufort ( remember this one is pronunced Bowfort )We found a nice little Marina close to the historic town of Swansboro. It was run my a family grandmother and two grandsons . The guys hosed down the boat and Jean and I set off for Piggly Wiggly supermarket.Saw lots of evidence of military families living here , buzz haircuts gave it away!
Started the evening with the usual cocktails and then headed off to the historic part of town where the action was.The restaurant we chose the Ice House had a wait time for a table of over an hour so decided to eat at the Italian Restaurant .Gene and I had the NZ mussels and yes they were the green lipped ones. Again lots of old houses in the town , more modest than some of the other southern towns we have seen, but very quaint.Back on the boat we sat round chatting and discussing the world's problems. I think Gene and Jean are finding that this trip by boat is seductive after all , just like we did!

March 29th Bald Head Island.

Hi Everyone
We had a leisurely walk around Georgetown in the morning. This town being the 3 rd oldest in the USA!It is so quaint and we were able to walk past many beautiful old homes most built between 1735 and 1890's .Saw a live oak tree estimated to be about570 years old. Then we wandered to the breakfast place called the Coffee Break Cafe (we ate there in November for Graeme's birthday).Had the delicious omelettes again with grits New York Style and finished our morning at the Independent Seafood Store buying fresh local shrimp for our dinner this evening.
At 10.45 am we set of for the ocean and had a good run all the way to BaldHead Island. We had south west seas and averaged about 20 knots or 22 Mph. Arrived at the Island late afternoon around 4 pm.Went for a nice walk to check out the tall concrete lighthouse ,church, Post office and golf course. This Island can only be reached by boat ,no bridge to connect to the mainland.Has about 1,000 residents mostly part timers. Drinks on board with nibbles followed by our delicious salad and gumbo with the local shrimp and special sausage bought at a farmers market. Lovely way to spend the day! We are truly blessed, Thanks to God!

March 28th Back to Georgetown

Hi Y'all
We left for Georgetown at a leisurely 11.15 am. Sunny day with north winds again but not rough along the ICW. Saw several dolphins along the way , also passed the Isle of Palms a popular holiday island just north of Charleston. We made our sandwiches on route and arrived in Georgetown at 4.15pm So just a five hour journey this time. Gave the boat a good wash down .Even though we are not in the ocean there is still a lot of salt water accumulating on the boat traveling on the ICW. Jean and I set off to explore the town which consists of one main street .Not unlike several NZ towns. Pop here is about 10,000. The town is dominated by a steel mill and a paper mill.Of course with south winds we had the wonderful paper pulp aromas to enjoy! We stopped for a homemade ice cream then amused ourselves in a general dept store buying fun cards and some linens.Found a bakery that sold South Carolina rice, so we each bought a packet .Suggested we keep it in the freezer.A new idea for us!
Cocktails on board then a walk back to the Rice Paddy Restaurant with the guys for dinner.Meal was excellent once again Well worth a return trip here.
Evening spent relaxing and planning our next day journey hoping to go out in the ocean tomorrow.Graeme studies the marine forecasts meticulously.

Back on the ICW again! 27 th March 2012

Hi Family and Friends,
Well back on our journey North again! We had a wonderful month in Hilton Head .I call it our Adult Playground! We joined a gym for the time we were there so had an opportunity to take gentle yoga, Pilates and strength and fitness classes plus use the machines. it is the most active gym I have been in and most of the clients are over thee of 70.We got out our folding bikes so were able to go everywhere.Lots of cycle tracks everywhere. The weather was great and we were able to play golf , even had a swin in the sea.So unusual for temps in the 70's at this time of year. But seems all the east coast has been having the same. Ate out at some good restaurants , had a day in Savannah and an evening in Beaufort .Went to an international young person's piano competition and a high school musical with all Elvis Presley songs. Had a lovely day in Bluffton eating at the Cottage and walking round the farmers market. We met a guy selling grass fed beef who had spent time in Palmerston North studying natural methods of cattle rearing.
Monday 26 th was our last day in HH and we spent it cycling, visit to the gym and food shopping for our trip north.
Will continue this on next blog.

March 27 th Continued

Hi Everyone,
Back to our departure. We have on board Jean and Gene for the journey North. They are happy to join us especially Gene as he has always wanted to do this trip on the ICW.We left Shelter Cove at HH at 10am on Broad Creek and made our way to the ICW. The weather was sunny but fairly windy with the dreaded NE direction not perfect for an ocean trip to Charleston we were hoping for.But as usual the ICW always works so we made our journey with no problem although it took 6 hours. The ICW was fairly quiet and as we had extra help on board ,I was able to relax and read a book for a time. We made lunch on the way also a luxury when the water is fairly calm. Spent the night in Charleston at the Bristol Marina, just up from the Charleston City Marina were we stayed on our way down. Bristol is a private marina but they do offer transient slips sometimes.Had a refreshing drink then headed off to Blossom another great city restaurant. Had a great meal, scallops, shrimp n grits , and collards.Good Southern cooking!
Early night to bed around 10 pm.

Last Day in Georgia

Hi Everyone ,
This morning we woke up to still waters and a mist hanging over the marsh. We had a 9.30 am leisurely start.the trip was very pleasant to Hilton Head.not much water traffic. Ar Lund an area called Thunderbolt so named by the American Indians, we struck lots of no wake zones but it was very pleasant. We passed to big boat manufacturers, Sea Ray and the more up scale Hinckley.Hickley use inboard jet engines invented by a New Zealander. Much of this stretch of Georgia was fairly windy as in meandering, but depths were fairly good. We entered Broad Creek at Hilton Head and docked in a nice slip facing a wooded Disney resort.Everything is very handy and once docked we were able to get our bikes out and explore the area.We have access to Palmento Dunes Resort which has golf and private beach. Also there is a well equipped gym 5 mins bike ride away which we are going to join for the month we are here.
So here we are til 27 th March and I must say it is nice to be staying put for awhile.

First day on the Georgia ICW

Hi faithful blog followers,
Well we set off in misty , rainy weather weather but the water was very calm , good for going long distance especially as not many boats were out either. we originally were heading for a St Simons Island Marina , but realized on a miserable day we may as well keep moving, as just sitting inside most of the day in a marina didn't make sense. We did a small detour at Brunswick for some very cheap fuel then headed north again for Medway River to a marina with the name of Sunbury Crab Restaurant and Marina. Most of the marinas in the lower part of Georgia
Are up rivers off the ICW we ended up traveling an extra half hour to find this place. The journey took us seven hours in total.A little too much on reflection but it's a learning process.Anyway the marina was worth it for the experience. It was a poorer area and quite isolated but the family who ran the marina were wonderful.Gave us a drink at the bar of their restaurant and then the son Clay, cooked us up a delicious meal of garlic shrimp, swordfish ,asparagus and special Belguim style French fries. We walked down the long dock back to our boat , stars were out and vistas of just the still ricer and miles of marshes. We slept well that night!

Fernandina Beach

Hi Everyone,
On to our next destination ! We wanted to see Fernandina Beach on our way down so it was good to add this into our itinerary north. It was a 6 hour drive up the ICW. We had originally planned an outside trip at St Augustine Inlet. We did venture out there, but once in the open sea it was rough. The boat was banging through the waves ,lots of rattling noises coming from inside the cupboards ,and I was just holding on.Graeme was his calm self as he steered the boat through it all but it was just not worth it .We decided to come back inside.Amazing how once we turned around the following sea made it so much calmer! If only we had been going south!
We passed through Jacksonville Beach (where we had dropped John and Rhonda off on our way down) and also got a call there from the Weltey's ( a couple we met who had been in Key Largo next to us at the Marina). They had seen our boat come under the Jacksonville Beach Bridge from their house by chance. They had been hoping we would call in to see them on our way up.Hopefully next time we come down!
Arrived at the Fernandina Harbor Marina which sits right beside the historic town. It sits on the ICW so very convenient. Down side it is situated right between two paper mills which emit quite interesting smells! But we got used to it.Had a nice walk into the town , historic old churches and courthouse. Some interesting shops and a good coffee bar.We checked out the restaurants and later headed back to Espana a Spanish/ Portuguese Restaurant.it was excellent In fact Graeme declared the Portuguese Fishermans stew we had , the best meal he had on the whole trip south.
Good way to end the day.

2 nd Day heading North

Hi All,
We had a long way to cover today 116 miles and all on the ICW so we knew it would be slow! I am not a real early bird but Graeme set the alarm for 6 am!We left just after 7 am!
The day was windy and even the ICW was fairly choppy with the waves coming at very close intervals, a short chop they call that on the marine forecast. We pasted Daytona Beach where we originally had planned to stay( the was no room thee as the Daytona 500 car races were on this weekend) and headed for the next marina called Palm Coast . We did see two big blimps in the air at Daytona , covering the races no doubt. Arrived in late afternoon at the marina. The boat was pretty dirty from all the spray , so Graeme and I washed the boat down thoroughly and even cleaned all the windows with a special product called Rain-X. The Marina is low key but cosy and sheltered and very convenient to the ICW. The owners very welcoming.Fresh coffee brewed every morning for the boaters, free grapefruit to (take obviously from someone's garden). It even has a fitness center.Several boaters keep their boats here for six months. We met several from Maryland. After our boat cleaning we were in need of a shower and dinner. We set off down the road to the European Village. It consisted of a square with a central area , several restaurants and shops on the ground level surrounding it.Above that were all the apartments. It seemed to sit in the middle of nowwhere! When we arrived , there was a band playing in the square and lots of people eating and listening to the music. We chose the Piazza Italian restaurant which seemed to have won very award going for the last 6 years! Food was good as was the wine selection. Walked on back to the boat and ended up in bed by 9.30 pm!
Over and Out.

Back on the road again ,well water really!

Hi Family and Friends,
We had a good visit back to Va, the Land Cruise Graeme organized went well although weather was a bit cold!Watching the Presidents Day Parade on the Monday was a fun way to end the long weekend. We headed back to Admirals Cove ,had an extra day there and left early on Feb 24 th for Melbourne. We decided to go outside in the Atlantic Ocean and left via Jupiter Inlet. It was suggested to use local knowledge while exiting , so we followed a couple of big Sprots Fishing boats out.One was called C,mon Aussie. We had a great trip , seas calm and a following wind, so perfect. We docked in at Melbourne Harbor Marina, very convenient to the little historical town and sheltered. After washing the salt water off the boat we set off to look at the town.Lots of little restaurants and it even boasted a Russian shop , British shop, Irish shop and German shop with all sorts of things including chocolate russian nesting dolls ( for eating) and we couldnt resist buying some twiglets( marmite covered pretzels) and Branston pickle. Our good friends Bev and Ed came to join us for drinks on the boat around 5 pm. Just as they arrived , we all witnessed a rocket in the air off to launch a communication satellite somewhere in the atmosphere! It was wondeful to have time catching up. There were rowers out in the harbor behind our boat , some eights and a double scull. The rowing club was situated next to our marina. We then went all together to Charthouse restaurant for an excellent dinner overlooking the ICW just around the corner from our marina. Lovely way to start our journey north.

Back to Admiral's Cove our Home away from Home.

We left Sunset Bay Marina after fueling up !Took just over $1,000.00 worth! I know you sailors will be saying that would take us a couple of years of sailing at least to spend that much!
We went back down south on the Intracoastal Waterway and this section was familiar to us as we had down it already. Saw an Australian flag flying at one of the mansions and suspect it may be Greg Norman's home.It was a pleasant journey going around 10 knots ( that saves fuel big time)and we tied up at the Schneider's dock with no problems at 1 pm. It is so restful and lovely here .We are indeed blest to have such kind friends.Just had a quiet rest of the day ,cleaning the boat and eating in.
Next Blog:
We have 2 days here then Sat am we will be heading out in a rental car over to Punta Gorda to join the Mobil Saudi crowd for lunch And we will then fly back to Virginia for two weeks. I will resume this blog around the 23rd Feb when we will start our journey north to Hilton Head.
Over and out.

Second half of Okeechobee journey

We started the morning with the good American breakfast at the marine.Eggs ,hash browns
( grated fried potato) and toast and coffee.at 9 am we slipped the lines and made our way across the Lake Okeechobee. It is a wide lake in fact we couldn't see land for most of it.The weather looked a bit ominous but the water was fairly calm ,about 1 to 2 ft. Suddenly we saw the most amazing rainbow in the sky.It was complete and very defined and bright. God,s wonderful handiwork on display! Our MJM boat companions Bob and Mary, had decided to try the outer rim of the lake. As the water depths were good. we ended up arriving at the same time at the lock which took us back into the Okechobee canal heading East. We heard stories that back in 2007 there was so little water that it was impossible to cross the lake and even Rolland Martin Marina was completely dry at their docks. We were just fine with at least 13 ft. Carried on towards Stuart , one more lock to do then arrived at Stuart around 2 pm. Our reason for stopping at Stuart was so we could catch up with Captain Dan who had led us through the boating course here nearly three years ago.We were able to dock the boat just in front of the huge one he was Captaining for a wealthy Californian owner. It was 115 ft, and made our boat look small!Dan had us come to look over the boat and later we had drinks on board.Interesting to see how some people like to travel ! We went for a walk into Stuart old historic area and found it a quaint little place with lots of interesting shops! Later we joined Dan and his girlfriend for dinner at Sailor's Return an excellent restaurant attached to our Sunset Bay Marina .

Feb 6 th Start of Okeechobee Canal

We were unsure how long this would take us to get to Clewiston and Rolland Martins Marina, the first real marina stop.We decided to leave at 10 am and set off in cloudy weather but the canal was flat and smooth. It is slow going initially as there's are many built up areas , small fishing craft and manatee zones. We went around 6 to 10 knots mainly. There are 3 locks to negotiate along the way and not far from the first one we were passed by an MJM boat similar to are old Sabre 40 ft.Kindly they radioed that they would wait for us at the first lock These locks varied in water depth but is was fun and not too difficult ! Making sure you had at least 3 fenders out to protect the boat on the side you tied up on and both Graeme and I had to hold onto a line each which was usually thrown down by the lock keeper. One at the bow and one at the stern. You had to play the line out as the water dropped. One of the locks went down 13 feet I didn't think I was going to have any line left! We arrived at the marina in time to tidy up and have our new traveling MJM companions over to our boat for a drink. We then all went over to dinner at the marina restaurant. I real old style USA bar style .The waitress was delightful and the food was good.Lovely fresh fish on the menu as this marina sits right on the edge of the big Lake Okeechobee.

On the move again Feb 3 rd and 4 th Feb

Well we are on the way again, down to Sanibel Island which we missed coming up to Sarasota.Seas were not too bad around 1 to 2 feet and we left at a leisurely 11 am.We were able to get the last slip in the marina as another boat had just left for Key West.Sometimes the marinas have lots of room and other times they are full .Seems this time of year is more busy, lots of transients who stay longer periods in the marinas.Parked right outside Grandma O's Restaurant where we went for dinner.Lots of fish on the menu .Had an early night .
Next morning 4 th Feb ,we got a couple of the marina bikes and explored some of the Island. Lots of good cycle tracks here.Sanibel is about 12 miles long similar size to Manhattan. Beaches are white sand and lots of shells.Favorite pastime seems to be shell collecting here. We also went to a historical village which gave us a great sense of life on the island back in the early 1900's.Lots of old houses in style of that time period ;a school house, store, even a Sears kit set house which was surprisingly roomy.Had a quick lunch then headed to Fort Myres . It only took 2 hours to get there. The Legacy Marina recommended by Mary Jane and Scott was perfect.Floating docks( my favorite) and a lovely view out on the water and the sunsets. Also close to Publix my go to supermarket. We had two nights here so we could watch the Super Bowl! The first night we ate at Joes Crab Shack and had a great meal.SuperBowl Sunday we decided to go after lunch to a big Arts Festival they had near the waterfront.Had fun time wandering around looking in the stalls , lots of unusual art work and most of the artists were the on hand to explain it all.Loved being able to watch the super bowl on our TV. It was in HD and nice and clear. We ate superbowl fare including chicken wings .Great game both teams deserved to win judging from the score.
Go Giants! Sorry Patriots.

Catch up time from 6 th Jan to 2 md Feb

Hi Family and Friends.( Guess you thought I wasn't going to continue!)
Well I have been a bit behind that is for sure!
Graeme and I headed back to New Zealand and arrived one day after Roy died , the 8th of January.Fortunately all the children were able to get back before he passed away. It was good to be there and give the family support as much as possible.
So hard to believe, as Roy seemed to be so fit and healthy and to find it wasn't so. We are so glad he didn't have to suffer and he seemed to add more into his 64 years of life than many 90 yr olds could ever do.The 2 hour funeral was a great send of for a great guy , and an emotional end was to see his favorite blue ute truck with his racing bike in the back following the hearse to the crematorium driven by his sons David and Philip. Behind them were a large group of his fellow racing cyclists from the Ramblers Club riding as a tribute to Roy who had done so much for the club.He had been their president for 8 years. Two days later we were able to sail out into the Hawkes Bay on a lovely perfect day and scatter his ashes, as he would have wanted it to be.
We gort back to Virginia somewhat shattered and jet lagged , then made our way down to Sarasota .We were relieved to see our boat was fine and were thankful to our slip neighbors Joan and Bruce who had done a great job checking the lines ,washing the boat and making sure the side against the concrete pier did no damage.Boaters on the whole are a great bunch of people. As we had rented the slip for a month we stayed on in Sarasota. We were able to start relaxing and enjoyed visiting our friends Doug and Elizabeth.Played a round of golf at Founders Club where they have their house, biked across to Lido and Longboat Key,ate out most nights and even went to see a comedy show .
One day we had a lovely couple on board to sea trial our boat as they were thinking of purchasing a Sabre 48 like ours. They were sold and ordered one the next day! I think Sabre are now up to finishing the tenth 48 in line and have orders for 27 boats First one was finished just under a year ago , not bad for this difficult economic times.
Over and Out.

About time to carry on From 6 th January to 25 th January

Hi Family and Friends,
Well much has happened up to this date.As many of you know we headed down to New Zealand and it was a sad occasion to farewell my older brother Roy who was in the height of wellness and fitness or so we thought! We made it back a day after he died , on the morning of 8th of January. It was good to be with family and be as supportive as we could, still hardly believing this had really happened.Roy had a good send off.A 2 hour funeral and was escorted to the crematorium by David and Philip v P driving in Roy's old blue ute truck ( had served him well with 200,000 kilometers on the clock)with his racing bike strapped on the back. The Ramblers Cycling Club of whom Roy was a very active participant and president of for 8 years followed behind on their racing bikes. a true tribute to a great guy, who gave his all and as one of the tributes said he lived more in 64 years than some people do in 90 years.two days later the family went out to sea in the Hawkes Bay and scattered his ashes (as he would have wanted )and white roses We are so glad he didn't have to suffer . Hard for the family left behind of course.
So we headed back to USA and got back to Sarasota on the 25 th January. We were relieved to see our boat was in good shape, due we are sure to the caring hands of Bruce and Joan our slip neighbors who washed it , checked the lines and made sure the side of the boat was well away from the concrete pier it was next to.
We had booked the slip for a whole month so were able to enjoy some days of getting over the jet lag and relax .

Will carry on the next blog.

1st Jan to 5th January 2012

Hi there Blog Followers,
Well we have had an interruption with this due to family circumstances, which I will explain later.
Jan 1st:
We had a lovely day in Key West cycling to the trolley bus site on Key West Island and taking the tour hop on and off bus ( just like the one in Washington DC ) and first visited the Kye West Butterfly Santuary.Absolutely fabulous ! Well worth a vist. Then took the bus while listening to the driver give us facts about the island. Had a great Cuban style sandwich lunch. Also went to visit the Harry Truman Litle White House where Truman and several other US presidents have stayed during their time in office, including John Kennedy and Jimmy Carter. Finished up with visit to see the Ernest Hemmingway House.
We relaxed back at the boat ,opened a bottle of champagne for the New Year, then cycled off to the local excellent waterside restaurant called the Hog Fish Grill. I tried the hog fish tacos recommended by the dock captain at our marina. Delicious!
Jan 2nd:
Due to the weather forecast changing and the prospect of severe winds expected that evening, we changed our plans and left a day early to travel the Gulf of Mexico to Marco Island. Fortunately the cold front had not hit yet so we had a few good hours before the winds got up and the sea changed. All in all,it was only the last hour where we had to slow down and deal with a choppy sea.
Got into Rose Marina around 2.30pm.Very friendly dock master , lovely floating docks and we got to park side on to the dock always the nicest option. Shortly after we had a visit from a couple we had met while docked at Key Largo. We invited them for drinks later in the afternoon.Boating people are friendly that way!Had a wonderful dinner at Arturo's a wonderful Italian Restaurant across the street. We both had the house special, a large pork chop filled with cheese, mushrooms and other goodies! Perfect for the colder weather we were then experiencing.
Jan 3rd:
During the night we had received a very sad call from Mark my younger brother and Carol his wife, to say our older brother Roy had suffered a severe heart attack and was going to be put into an induced coma. We spent the day in limbo as were our poor family back in New Zealand.
We decided to take our bikes out and explore the area.Checked out the big Marriot Resort on the beach side. Lots of white sandy beaches in this area. Later we had an afternoon drink at a cute little bar called the Snug Inn on the waterfront. It had live entertainment all afternoon. Dinner was again in walking distance of the dock at a place called the Dolphin Tiki Bar and Cafe, another fun place.

We decided to head up to Naples for the night. People had been recommending it was a good place to stay for a night. Only 12 miles away so an easy jaunt. We stayed at the Naples City Docks which was very central and within walking distance of the town. We had a walking tour of the area and decided to try out the Tommy Bahamas Restaurant for dinner. This is the original Tommy Bahamas site and he has been very successful, making casual men's wear almost the Hawaiian look with flowery shirts. While at dinner we got the call from Mark to say Roy was not going to make it so we immediately made plans that evening to head down to NZ as soon as possible.Little tricky as our passports were back in Virginia.

Early morning we left Naples and drove the boat the 5 hour journey to Sarasota so we could leave the boat there while we were going to NZ. Fortunately , there is a very nice couple on the adjoining dock who offered to watch our boat for us; especially with the falling and rising tides and concrete fixed dock .That was a relief! our friend, and Graeme's former boss, Doug got us to the airport an hour later and so we began our 6 flight journey down to Hawkes Bay and the family.
So I will be suspending this blog until later in the month.
Best Wishes, and thanks for your support already received.

Off to Key West ,last day of 2011

Hi Family and friends,
Well what can I say , another beautiful day here in the Keys.We set off at 10.30am ,and had a great ride down the coast.I short journey of 2 hours to get here.We are staying on Stock Island a part of Key West but not on the main island. The Marina , the Key WestHarbor Yacht Club and Marina is in a sheltered cove , just off the ocean and has a new club house ,swimming pool and free kayaks for guest use to explore the area. Once settled with the boat ,we decided to venture over to the heart of Key West ie Duvall Street, the main drag!We were able to walk to a bus stop near the West Marine Store and for $2 got a ride into town. It's only 50 cents if you are a senior ie over 60 yrs! Many people about in the town and we wandered the shops mainly looking in the art galleries, then to Mallory Square to watch yet another fabulous sunset and the final famous green flash as the sun went down.Lots of street performers were in the area, using fire and balancing feats to entertain the crowds. For dinner we tried out the Conch Republic Restaurant in the harbor area .Got a tip from a customer at the bar to ask for royal red shrimp( not on the menu)We were not disappointed, they were delicious!
Afterwards we wandered the streets. Duvall Street is shut off for the evening from 6 pm.We saw some interesting sights, nothing too outrageous .One guy was wheeling his cat around in a small stroller. That was a first!Dogs yes ,but cats never! By 9pm we had decided to go back to the marina, and enjoy the comfort of the boat to see the New Year in .We watched the ball drop at Times Square in New York on TV.Blair and Danielle called to wish us Happy New Year , then we went to bed.We boaties don't have the staying power with all this sea air!
Hope you all had a great New Years Eve and will enjoy a healthy, happy and prosperous 2012.
Over and out ,
Erica and Graeme.
