This is the historic Chain Ferry, it provides a mean to get across the Kalamazoo River to the West Shore.Originally a drawbridge, it was built n 1845 but later crashed into the river. Then a flat barge was built which could take a wagon and team of horses.An underwater chain connects to both the west and east banks The chain is passed through a hand cranked winch mechanism to draw the ferry from one side to the other.A boy called a cracker supplies the muscle power to ferry the boat across.
